Peyton

“FUCK,” I BITE OUT AS I lift Lenley’s suitcase.

She wasn’t joking when she said it was heavy. This thing is huge too.

I pull on the handle to use the wheels until I get to the stairs. I’m so busy thinking about all the things I’m going to say to tease her about owning the biggest suitcase in the world that my dad’s voice startles me when I reach the stairs, and it’s a miracle I don’t send the suitcase tumbling down.

Hopefully Len doesn’t have any breakables in there.

“Son,” Dad calls, and his tone is so serious that I think something must have happened at work.

Work is the only thing that has kept us on speaking terms since Paris.

Dad has been giving the guys and me the silent treatment, still convinced that our relationship with Lenley will blow up in our faces.

He hasn’t been listening to his wife’s reassurances that even if we broke up—and we won’t—that it won’t affect their relationship.

Dad doesn’t trust us. He’s always said that people rarely change. He’s convinced that this is a phase, and we’ll get bored with monogamy and revert back to our ways of wild parties and meaningless hookups.

“Hey, Dad. I didn’t know there was someone home,” I say, keeping my eyes trained on Lenley’s suitcase and thanking all the gods that I didn’t decide to take Lenley to her room and have a quickie before we go home.

“Gina was in meetings all day, and the atmosphere at headquarters was a little tense after the decision about the new captain was announced. Gina has a great office here at home, and she’s happy to share, so I decided to avoid running into any of the Penns without Gina there as a buffer and finish my work from home.”

I nod. “I can only imagine. If Anna and Kyle took the news about the captain position like Darrius, then I think you made the right choice. I just bumped into him when I got here.”

There’s a beat of silence.

I can practically feel Dad’s gaze on me, and I force myself to meet his eyes.

I’m not surprised when I see the frown on his face and the hard set of his jaw. That’s the expression he’s had on his face whenever he looks at me since Paris.

I’m itching to go, and I’m about to say that Chan is waiting outside, but his words stop me in my tracks.

“I haven’t had a chance to congratulate you about making captain, Peyton.”

I shrug. “It’s just been a few hours since we were notified, so it’s understandable. Thank you though. It was long overdue. That’s the way it should have been five years ago when I came here for tryouts. I would have earned a spot on the team, and I would have given Penn serious competition for the captain spot, but we all know how things worked out back then.”

He claps me on the shoulder. “You’re right. That’s why I’m twice as proud of you. Not only did you
